Paragraph 1 – Introduction — Абзац 1 — Введение
• Make general points as in a For and against essay
Ответ от учителя
In an opinion essay, the writer expresses their personal viewpoint on a particular topic or issue. This type of essay is different from other types of essays, such as a descriptive or narrative essay, as it requires the writer to present their own perspective and support it with evidence and examples. Like a for and against essay, an opinion essay should begin with an introduction that provides a general overview of the topic and presents the writer’s stance on the issue. The introduction should also include a thesis statement that clearly states the writer’s opinion and the main points that will be discussed in the essay.
Paragraph 2 – Body paragraph 1 — Абзац 2 — Основной абзац 1
• Present the main argument in support of your opinion
• Use evidence and examples to support your argument
The body paragraphs of an opinion essay should present the writer’s main arguments in support of their opinion. In the first body paragraph, the writer should present their strongest argument and provide evidence and examples to support it. For example, if the writer’s opinion is that social media has a negative impact on society, they could argue that social media promotes unrealistic beauty standards and leads to body shaming. The writer could then provide evidence, such as statistics on the prevalence of body shaming on social media, and examples of individuals who have been negatively affected by social media’s beauty standards.
Paragraph 3 – Body paragraph 2 — Абзац 3 — Основной абзац 2
• Present another argument in support of your opinion
• Use evidence and examples to support your argument
In the second body paragraph, the writer should present another argument in support of their opinion. This argument should be related to the main topic and should also be supported by evidence and examples. For example, if the writer’s opinion is that animal testing should be banned, they could argue that animal testing is cruel and unnecessary. The writer could then provide evidence, such as examples of alternative testing methods that do not involve animals, and examples of animals that have been harmed or killed during testing.
Paragraph 4 – Counterargument — Абзац 4 — Противоположный аргумент
• Present the opposing viewpoint
• Refute the opposing viewpoint
In an opinion essay, it is important to acknowledge and address the opposing viewpoint. In the fourth paragraph, the writer should present the opposing viewpoint and explain why they disagree with it. For example, if the writer’s opinion is that school uniforms should be mandatory, they could present the opposing viewpoint that school uniforms limit students’ freedom of expression. The writer could then refute this argument by explaining that school uniforms promote a sense of unity and equality among students, and that students can still express themselves through their actions and behavior.
Paragraph 5 – Conclusion — Абзац 5 — Заключение
• Summarize the main points
• Restate the thesis statement
• Provide a final thought or recommendation
The conclusion of an opinion essay should summarize the main points discussed in the essay and restate the thesis statement. The writer should also provide a final thought or recommendation related to the topic. For example, if the writer’s opinion is that junk food should be banned in schools, they could conclude by summarizing their main arguments and restating their thesis statement that junk food has a negative impact on students’ health and academic performance. The writer could then provide a final recommendation, such as encouraging schools to offer healthier food options or promoting healthy eating habits among students.
