The passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject of a sentence is acted upon by the verb, rather than performing the action themselves. In order to identify passive voice, we look for the use of a form of the verb «to be» (such as «is,» «was,» «were,» etc.) followed by the past participle of another verb.
To complete the table in the Workbook, we need to read the texts in Exercise 27 and identify examples of passive voice. Here are a few examples:
Text 1: «The cake was baked by my grandmother.» — This sentence is in the passive voice because the subject («cake») is being acted upon by the verb («was baked»).
Text 2: «The book was written by a famous author.» — Again, this sentence is in the passive voice because the subject («book») is being acted upon by the verb («was written»).
Text 3: «The car was repaired by a mechanic.» — Once more, this sentence is in the passive voice because the subject («car») is being acted upon by the verb («was repaired»).
By identifying these examples of passive voice in the texts, we can complete the table in the Workbook with the appropriate verb forms. For example, we might write:
| Sentence | Active Voice | Passive Voice |
|———-|————-|—————|
| The cake was baked by my grandmother. | My grandmother baked the cake. | The cake was baked. |
| The book was written by a famous author. | A famous author wrote the book. | The book was written. |
| The car was repaired by a mechanic. | A mechanic repaired the car. | The car was repaired. |
By completing this exercise, we can improve our understanding of passive voice and how it is used in English grammar.
