The past simple of the verbs are:
— wanted
— opened
— washed
— worked
— carried
— cooked
— cleaned
— watched
— played
— visited
— traveled
— listened
To form the past simple of regular verbs, we usually add -ed to the base form of the verb. However, there are some irregular verbs that have different forms in the past simple. In the list above, «want» becomes «wanted», «open» becomes «opened», «wash» becomes «washed», «work» becomes «worked», and «carry» becomes «carried». These are all regular verbs.
On the other hand, «cook», «clean», «watch», «play», «visit», «travel», and «listen» are irregular verbs. Their past simple forms do not follow the -ed rule. For example, «cook» becomes «cooked», «clean» becomes «cleaned», «watch» becomes «watched», «play» becomes «played», «visit» becomes «visited», «travel» becomes «traveled» or «travelled», and «listen» becomes «listened».
It’s important to learn the past simple forms of verbs because they are used to talk about actions that happened in the past. For example, «Yesterday, I cooked dinner for my family» or «Last week, I visited my grandparents». By using the past simple, we indicate that the action is completed and happened at a specific time in the past.
